Description: A photograph depicting a group of protesters gathered outside of a building carrying signs that read: “We Want Neutralization Not Public Relations!”, “Listen to the People: We Want Safe Alternatives,” “I Like My Air Without Dioxin,” and “We Don’t Need No Incineration.” These community members were protesting the planned incineration of chemical weapons being held at the Blue Grass Army Depot. Kentuckians feared that this method of weapons destruction would have catastrophic effects on both public and environmental health. Several grassroots organizations, such as The Concerned Citizens of Madison County (1984) and Common Ground (1987) (among others), arose with the goal of convincing the government to pursue safer chemical weapons disposal methods.
